Bakuchiol vs Retinol: Benefits, Differences and Who Should Use Them

Botanical oil and laboratory serum illustrating bakuchiol versus retinol

Short answer: Retinol is a vitamin A derivative with a larger evidence base for photoageing, while bakuchiol is a distinct plant-derived ingredient with promising but more limited clinical research. Bakuchiol may be easier for some skin to tolerate; it is not chemically identical to retinol.

Evidence and mechanism

Retinoids influence cell turnover and gene expression through retinoic-acid pathways. Retinol must convert within the skin and is weaker than prescription retinoic acid but still well studied.

Bakuchiol has antioxidant properties and has shown improvements in photoageing in small clinical studies. Similar outcomes in one study do not make the ingredients identical.

Tolerance

Retinol commonly causes dryness, peeling and irritation during introduction. Bakuchiol is often marketed for better tolerability, but botanical formulas and fragrance can still cause reactions.

Start either option two or three nights per week, use moisturiser and increase only when comfortable.

How to choose

Choose retinol when evidence strength is the priority and skin can tolerate it. Choose Bakuchiol Retinol Oil when an oil texture and gradual retinol-alternative strategy better fit the routine.

The Silouel product title contains “Retinol Oil,” but its highlighted active is bakuchiol; always verify the INCI rather than interpreting the title as proof of conventional retinol.

Can they be combined?

Some routines use both, but the combination is optional. Alternate nights first and avoid adding an exfoliating acid at the same time.

Daily sunscreen is required for any routine targeting photoageing or uneven tone.

For a bakuchiol-led option

Bakuchiol Retinol Oil is an oil-based formula for use near the end of an evening routine.
